Joseph Capasso, known to his friends and clients as Joey, is a native New Yorker, born in the lower Hudson River Valley. Here, the forests along the river's banks were his constant companion. Nature and the natural world were forces that would compel him to drift into the world of the arts.
After serving as a Paratrooper/Ranger with the 101st Airborne Division during his late teen years, he embarked on a mission to study the fine arts. Knocking on doors of the greatest artist he could find, he offered to do carpentry in exchange for private coaching. This approach placed him into the studios of America's most famous painters and sculptors, all of whom suggested he travel through Europe with the same zeal and lust for the arts.
Armed with letters of introduction, he landed in Florence, Italy where a sculptor suggested he might use wood as a medium for his art work. On the prompt, Joe, traveled to Paris and began his passion of studying modern wood sculpting techniques. He found his niche when the artisans he study along side convinced him this was his calling.
Having returned to New York, Joey devotes his passion to his designs and inspirations at J. Capasso Furniture studio creating artistic furniture inspired by the grain, growth, and mystery of the wood called to be touched by his hands.
